For many of us, cartoons are a cornerstone of our childhoods, filled with beloved characters and fond memories. But beyond the playful antics and colorful animations lies a hidden layer of humor meant for grown-ups. These cleverly disguised jokes often fly right over kids' heads, only to reveal themselves years later, leaving us chuckling (or choking on our coffee) in surprise. Dive in and scroll to discover the most surprising and funny jokes hidden in your favorite childhood cartoons!
Hey Arnold! - Grandpa Lost All His Brain Cells at Woodstock
Most people older than 40 know all about Woodstock. Those who got to experience it will never forget it, and those who didn't will always wish they had. What an unforgettable experience! However, it seems that Grandpa can't recall much of anything since his Woodstock days. This joke is definitely not aimed at the youngsters sitting in front of the screen. Instead, it is an effort to make the older viewers chuckle.
Now, we can't help but wonder what Grandpa got up to while he was at Woodstock. We guess we'll never know.
Animaniacs - Let's Hope the Rabbits Going on Noah's Ark Aren't Related
Most of us are familiar with the Biblical tale of Noah and the Arc. This episode of The Animaniacs involved them traveling to that time. While exposing children to such valuable stories is a good idea, including inappropriate jokes might have us scratching our heads. Here, there is a concern about the two rabbits that Noah has selected. Why? Well, because they both have the same last name, Bunny.
To reinforce the joke, Noah breaks out of character and looks at the camera to say, "Let's hope not. It's a children's show."
Rugrats - Grandpa's Special Movie Entertainment for After the Kids Go to Bed
As children, we think that our parents and grandparents are the embodiment of perfection. It is only much later that we realize that we are all just human beings with faults or, in this case, questionable taste. While Rugrats tend to focus mainly on the youth, now and then, an adult joke crept in unnoticed. We doubt a joke like this will be allowed in cartoon creation today, and understandably so.
At least Grandpa has the decency to wait until the kids have gone to bed before he begins his adventure into his beloved movie.
The Powerpuff Girls - "Whenever Their Masculinity Is Threatened, They Shrink in Size"
We know that The Powerpuff Girls was one of the first cartoons to show that girls can also be bold, brave, and fierce. We love a cartoon with girl power! In fact, that is why we love the show so much. While the show does a great job of showcasing the many talents of girls, it takes a stab at men every now and again. This joke is one of those aimed at masculinity.
Even though a joke like this goes over the heads of small viewers, it is entertaining to those who understand it. It is quick, quirky humor at its best.
Teen Titans - Apparently, They Missed One Specific Detail
This is another show whose popularity spread like wildfire. Packed with action, interesting storylines, and humor, the youth just couldn't get enough of this action cartoon. Even though the show had many fun elements, the humor wasn't always above board. Here, for example, Beast Boy feels unsatisfied after examining every part of his action figure. He tells his friend that the details aren't right while lifting his action figure's pants.
Now that we are older, what he was referring to is obvious and definitely on the naughty side. However, as children, we thought nothing about this exchange.
Animaniacs - This Is a Family Show... They Can't Flick the Bird
The Animaniacs became very popular among kids in the early '90s because of its fast-paced storytelling, singing, and funny scenes. However, while the kids couldn't get enough, the show was canceled prematurely. We can't help but wonder if its inappropriateness was part of the reason why. This is an excellent example of a joke not meant for young viewers. The three Animaniacs are asked to give the alluring woman a bird.
After her request, they said they couldn't give her the bird since it was a family show. This implies that the bird doesn't refer to the animal but rather the slang term for presenting someone with your middle finger.
Rugrats - We Have a Feeling Howard's Male Bonding Group Is Doing More Than Just Bonding
Since this show was packed with fun tales, exciting characters, and laughs, it's not surprising that it ran for 12 years. Many moments in the show were aimed at adult viewers (who were likely watching along with their kids), which made the show very popular among young and old alike. Here is another example of subtle naughtiness. The family needs a babysitter because Betty is on a trip, and Howard is meeting his male bonding group.
Howard's gestures as he announces his plans make us wonder whether they are as innocent as he wants them to sound, and we know the answer: absolutely not!
SpongeBob SquarePants - Patrick Doesn't Know the Meaning of "genius"
Another genuinely iconic show that is still enjoyed by young and old is Spongebob Squarepants. Viewers enjoy the show's random events and humor. In fact, most people worldwide know and love the sponge that lives in a pineapple under the sea. Patrick Star is known for being intellectually challenged, so his reaction is hilarious when Spongebob says his genius is showing. Patrick immediately covers up his lower region, proving that he doesn't know what genius is.
Unsurprisingly, a show with a snail that meows, plankton that wants to take revenge, and a crab that runs the best hamburger joint under the sea remains one of the most enjoyable cartoons on TV.
Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! - Women Just Go on and on and on
Over the years, cartoons have joked about the genders and hinted at the weaknesses of both women and men. While some light bantering is fine, it can become problematic if it is too much. The main thing to remember is that these shows were designed primarily for children. By repeatedly putting women in a bad light, the show risked becoming unpopular among women and girls. We are all for gender equality, right?
This joke implies that women are like mountains in that they just go on and on. This has a negative connotation as it implies that women can be unbearable.
Rocko's Modern Life - A Suspiciously Named Doctor
Rocko's Modern Life was also a show that often pushed the boundaries because of adult humor. This is a good example of a joke that isn't really meant for children. A doctor in the show is called Dr. Bendova. While this might seem innocent enough, it sounds pretty suspect when we think about it. Of course, little kids didn't understand the name's double meaning, so it wasn't an issue.
The show enjoyed three years of popularity before it was canceled in November 1996. The show still has some fans, but the rest of us realize it wasn't really appropriate.
SpongeBob SquarePants - Spongebob Got Caught Watching Late-Night HBO (under-The-Sea Version)
Most people who have watched this show find Spongebob's actions hilarious. Sometimes, Spongebob and Patrick's experiences can be pretty relatable. This is one of those times. Some of us have experienced the awkwardness of someone walking in on us when we were doing something that might seem bizarre. In this episode, Spongebob's pet snail, Gary, slithers away after he walks in on Spongebob watching something suspicious and being told it wasn't what it seemed.
Spongebob responds that he was simply searching for the sports channel. Sure, Spongebob! We believe you on that one!
Rugrats - He Thinks He Still Has His Umbilical Cord, but It's Something Else
Naturally, there are significant differences between women and men, and this joke plays on one of these differences. Two babies are having a conversation. The girl says that her umbilical cord has been removed. The boy responds by saying that he still has his, luckily. Young audience members might not even understand the meaning of this, but we know he isn't referring to his umbilical cord. Not even sort of!
Light adult humor like this made the show popular among children and adults, too. With witty writing, the show claimed one of the top spots in TV shows.
Justice League Unlimited - We Wonder Why the Fastest Man Alive Can't Get a Date
The Justice League features some of the most iconic superheroes from our childhood. The show kept our attention with its fast pace, endless adventure, and dry humor. The focus of this joke is the Flash. Known for his superhuman speed and sharp humor, the Flash proudly boasts that he is the fastest man alive. We applaud Wonder Woman's comeback, which implies that he is single because he rushes things that shouldn't be rushed. We bet the Flash would be quite a hit amongst the ladies if he learned to take his time.
The Justice League cartoons featured all our favorite superheroes, including the Flash, Batman, Wonder Woman, and Superman. We wonder how many other jokes went over our heads.
The Fairly Odd Parents - Dad's Dreams Were Shattered When He Was Born
We all know that parenthood is an undertaking that changes our lives. While most of us feel that becoming a parent changes our lives for the better, Timmy's father has a different opinion. After complaining about his dreams being shattered years ago, he asks Timmy how old he is. This is giggle-worthy because it implies that these dreams were shattered when Timmy was born. Oh, dear. What sacrifices did Timmy's dad need to make?
Luckily, a joke like this one went way over the young viewers' heads, as no child would find a comment like that funny.
What's New, Scooby-Doo? - She's of Legal Age so She Can Do Adult Things
Another cartoon that has stood the test of time is Scooby-Doo. Fans love the show because of its quirky humor, excellent character development, and epic thrills. While the show was originally aimed at entertaining the youth, there are moments that Mom and Dad can enjoy, too. In this episode, Marcy comments on the fact that she is 18 years old. She says she is now legally old enough to, and then there is a pause.
The perfectly timed pause is what makes the scene funny. Even though she answers with the word vote, we can't help but wonder whether she had something else in mind.
Johnny Bravo - She Had a Flashback to the Last Time She Was Blindfolded
Created and aired in the late '90s, Johnny Bravo was regarded as quite forward-thinking in its approach to entertainment. As a result, the show included many adult jokes while keeping it very entertaining for the little ones. We love the fact that they can take something as innocent as playing with a pinata and hint at something naughty so subtly. This is what made the show so iconic for most of us.
The character seems thrilled to join the party for fun. She says she can't remember when she last used a blindfold. Her response shows us that it is not a memory she can share at a kiddies' party.
Freakazoid! - He Likes His Sausage
These days, people are very open to the way everyone lives, and it is wonderful to experience a time when people can openly talk about their life choices. However, when Freakazoid aired, people weren't so open-minded. That is why this adult joke stands out. The police officer simply answers that he never got married or had kids because he enjoys eating meat too much. This is not an excuse used by many, or rather, anyone.
The joke makes us wonder whether the word meat represents something entirely different here. Well, we are sure the police officer is enjoying his life regardless of his culinary choices!
Dexter's Laboratory - Dexter Hires a Dancer and She Comes With Extra Fees
Starting in 1996, Dexter's Laboratory entertained us with its wit, unique plots, and fun character development. During that time, there was most likely not a child who didn't like this popular show. While the show was bright, funny, and entertaining for the kiddos, they pushed boundaries regarding adult humor. Here is a great example. Dexter's sister, Dee Dee, has tested his patience once again, so he fired her, of course.
Her replacement is Candi. When Dexter asks Candi if she can dance for him, she says she can but that it'll be an extra fee of $50. This makes us think that Candi is most likely more than a lab assistant.
Animaniacs - A Play of Words the Kids Will Never Understand
This joke is a play of words because there is a pressing need to dust for prints. After mishearing this, they get their hands on the Artist formerly known as Prince. While we understand that Prince and prints sound similar, the joke went too far. This is one of those cartoon adult jokes that make us cringe inside because of its awkwardness. With jokes like these, it's no surprise the Animaniacs aren't on our screens anymore.
Even though there is no denying that the joke is in bad taste, the visual representation of Prince is spot-on!
Shrek - Lord Farquaad Is Definitely Compensating for Something
When Shrek was released, it became an instant Blockbuster, with people worldwide lining up to see the movie. Since then, there have been several, and they are simply amazing. These movies are funny, cute, and heartwarming. They are also quite naughty at times. Here, Donkey and Shrek finally arrive at Lord Farquaad's castle, only to find that it is massive while Lord Farquaad is tiny. Shrek can't help but comment that Lord Farquaard is compensating for something.
Shrek is a very witty character who gets dragged into issues he didn't create. He has a great heart, though, and that is why viewers love him so much.
The Flintstones - What Does He Need 3 Heads for?
Most kids from the '80s have memories of sitting in front of the television, hooked to this show. The Flintstones are such a big part of our childhoods that we can quickly identify the characters. While the show was created for children, it is filled with innuendos that aren't meant for the little ones. Luckily, a young audience would not understand the adult jokes from the show. In this scene, Fred and Barney discuss how they can become taller.
Fred suggests that Barney should consider getting another head. Barney naughtily replies that having a third head would not make a difference. Wow, Barney, we never knew you had multiple heads.
Johnny Bravo - They Definitely Got the Wrong Guy
Fans of Johnny Bravo know that the character is one of a kind. His voice, hair, resilience, and charms make him an unforgettable cartoon character. Johnny Bravo enjoys putting on a facade as if he is every woman's dream man, and who knows, for some, he might just be. This episode made the adults in the room laugh because Johnny gets himself in a tight spot. He is to be sacrificed because only a particular person can break the spell.
Johnny does a retake when he hears these words, implying that he doesn't fit the bill. Let's hope he is able to convince them that they have the wrong guy!
Ed, Edd, and Eddy - Important Notes on the Bathroom Wall
This show became famous even though it was never classified as either a children's show or a show for older viewers. People quickly began to tune in because they enjoyed the humor and unpredictable plots. In fact, due to its popularity, the show ran for 10 years! At the time, it was one of the longest-running shows of all time. This episode gives us a taste of the show's adult humor. There are several notes on the wall.
Even though it is random to see notes on the wall that say things like 'Walk, don't run,' or 'Lock door,' they don't come close to the one on the left. This would have gone over the little ones' heads, but adult viewers might have chuckled at reading the note.
Dexter's Laboratory - Dad's Trophy... We Hope the Kids Watching This Didn't Know How to Read yet
Dexter's mom is one of the most loved characters in the cartoon industry. Why? Well, because she is upbeat, positive, loving, and pretty funny at times. In fact, Dexter's mom is the character that tends to perfectly balance Dexter's chaotic science experiments with his home life. Dexter's mom is an outstanding cook, and she can tackle a number of tasks at once, but she is utterly unaware that her son has his own laboratory in her home. The fact that Dexter does all these insane experiments under her nose adds to the show's appeal.
People enjoy joking about trophy wives, and this show included a joke. In this episode, Dexter's mom is on task, as always. However, when she bends over we see the words 'Dad's Trophy' written on her behind.
Doug - Apparently When You Love Someone, Things Shoot up in the Air
The main character of the show is a teenage boy who can be so awkward at times that viewers cringe. However, his awkwardness remains one of the reasons why we love him so much. Many teenage boys can relate to the character as he navigates his way through the teenage years. As with most teenage boys, Doug is going through his first crush. He has fallen hard for Patti Mayonnaise. Not knowing how to tell her how he feels, he tells her that his volcano erupts because he loves her. It is funny yet sweet.
As Doug's volcano called The Mighty Volcano, keeps shooting out lava, we can only hope that Patti Mayonnaise feels the same way. Sigh, first love is a sweet thing.
Tiny Toons Adventures - Just Reading His Magazine
This is an excellent example of a cartoon that includes something meant for the adults in the room that goes over the youth’s heads. In this episode, Daffy Duck is seen holding a magazine. The viewer can sense some irritation from Bugs Bunny when he looks over at Daffy Duck and scoffs loudly. It is only years later, after we have lost some of our youthful innocence that we put it together.
Daffy Duck holds a magazine called PlayDuck, which is very similar to a magazine that is very popular for quite adult reasons. Now we know that even though Bugs scoffed, he probably leaned over to have a look, too.
Justice League Unlimited - He Left His DNA All Over Town
Batman is one of the most iconic superheroes. People love his dark past, intriguing inventions, and his mysterious personality. Batman was the topic of discussion in this Justice League Unlimited episode, or instead, his DNA was. After commenting that it was easy enough to get Bruce Wayne's DNA because he left it all over town, adult viewers are left to make what they want with that. However, Amanda's reaction shows us that she didn't mean it that way.
Instead, she meant that his blood is all over town because of all the fights he had been involved in. Just another superhero keeping Gotham City safe at night.
The Fairly Odd Parents - Don't Bother Him While He Takes the Paper Towels up to His Room
Another iconic '90s show that broke the conventional mold with its humor and boldness is The Fairly Odd Parents. The show is filled with funny and random moments that keep viewers interested. In this episode, Timmy's parents decide to get the help of Dr. Bill. This is already funny because Dr. Phil was a famous TV personality when this show was aired. We can't help but think that Dr. Bill is a parody of Dr. Phil.
While they are trying to get advice from Dr. Bill about parenting Timmy, their son is gathering toilet paper for some unclear reason. Anyone who has had a teenager in the house will most likely nod along while laughing at this scene.
The Powerpuff Girls - They Were All Accident Babies
When it comes to iconic TV shows, the Powerpuff Girls are right up there. Every little girl was hooked to the screen when these seemingly innocent crime-fighting girls were on. We understand why. The show was packed with action, thrills, and humor. However, the humor wasn't always limited to young minds. Here, the girls meet a guy who was accidentally created in a lab. If you deal with mad scientists, that is a risk you take.
However, we smile when she shares that she was also an accident because the two creation methods are very different.
Doug - Let's Talk About the Birds and the Bees
Every child gets to a point where he or she needs to experience the birds and the bees talk. This episode was Doug's turn because their cat had kittens. The issue is that Doug thought their cat was a male, so he is bewildered about the whole situation. He obviously hadn't had the birds and bees talk yet. This becomes a sweet moment when Mom states that the time has come to have the chat.
This show was great for preteens as it dealt with the awkwardness of being a grade 6 boy. With light adult humor like this, the show always respected boundaries.
Cow and Chicken - The Perfect Job for Cow
First aired in 1997, this show lasted four seasons before being canceled. Since it was unique, bold, and, at times, irritating, it isn't surprising that it didn't last much longer. The writers often played with words, sharing jokes that were not at all right for young audiences. One of those jokes involves Dr. Junk and Cow's new job. While offering a cow a job as a squirter seems innocent enough, the wordplay makes it inappropriate.
The fact that the doctor's name was Dr. Junk and that Cow said it would be his pleasure to squirt for him is just a bit too much!
The Amazing World of Gumball - Lock the Door Next Time
The Amazing World of Gumball is a British-American TV show that enjoyed an epic following because of its unique animation style, quirky humor, and strange plots. Simply put, it is unlike anything you've ever watched and you're unlikely to find anything like it. The scene involves one of the most awkward encounters that could possibly happen to anyone. Gumball walks in on Banana Joe, who is watching something questionable on the TV.
Gumball stops in his tracks, looking at the TV and the roll of toilet paper on the table next to it. Viewers share the cringe-worthiness of the scene as the characters stare awkwardly at each other.
Rugrats - A Kid His Age Should Be Playing With His Friends!
In this episode of the Rugrats, Chuckie has gotten a new clown doll called Boppo. He quickly grows so attached to this doll that he hardly leaves his room. This becomes a concern to Phil as he feels that kids Chuckie's age should be playing outside instead of 'bopping his Boppo,' This is clearly a scene that was written with older viewers in mind. We have no doubt that the younger viewers never even batted an eyelid at this scene, while Mom and Dad might have enjoyed a giggle.
Clever writing like that led to the show's popularity. In the 13 years that the show ran, 172 episodes were aired. Every episode was quirky and witty.
Shrek 2 - It's Not Mine!
After the epic success of the first film, the creators continued to introduce even more unforgettable characters. Puss in Boots is one of the cutest, funniest, and most charming characters to come out of the cartoon world. His accent, sense of humor, and classic Spanish ways make him a true icon. The character has been so successful that he has enjoyed his own movies. This joke from Shrek 2 is a spin on people finding illegal items in bags at the airport.
Almost always, the culprit will deny that it belongs to them. Puss in Boots is no exception, quickly saying that the catnip isn't his. The joke is well-written because catnip does tend to create a bit of a euphoric state for cats.
Madagascar - The Reunion
This blockbuster enjoyed great popularity because it is funny, entertaining, and suitable for all ages. There have been many versions of Madagascar, including Penguins of Madagascar. If you haven't yet tuned in for Penguins of Madagascar, do so because the film is so entertaining that you'll never look at a penguin the same way again. The main characters, Marty and Alex, are not what we'd imagine best friends would be. Marty is a zebra, and Alex is a lion. The differences between the two characters add a lot of fun to the movie. The two are reunited in this scene, which starts so sweetly.
As they shout out to each other, viewers imagine the sweetest of embraces would follow. However, Marty is distracted and shouts, "Oh! Sweet Honey Ice Tea!" While this might seem like nothing much, it is an acronym for a word that means things are about to go downhill quickly.
